The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington, Northumberland, in England, where it worked as a vermin hunter and rabbit courser. That history shows in a lithe, arched body built for speed, likely helped by Whippet ancestry, and in a woolly topknot and rounded head that give the breed its lamb-like look.
Bedlingtons are usually gentle and affectionate at home, yet spirited when something moves. The crisp, curly coat sheds little but needs brushing several times a week and a professional clip every six to eight weeks. Puppies are born dark and lighten with age. Copper toxicosis, an inherited liver condition, is the breed's best-known health issue, so a veterinarian's guidance on diet and liver checks is worthwhile.
