The English Cocker Spaniel comes from England's land spaniels, where the smaller "cocking" spaniels earned their name flushing woodcock from thick cover. The result is a compact, sturdy sporting dog, usually 26 to 34 pounds, with a silky coat, long low-set ears and soft, dark eyes. It's a separate breed from the smaller American Cocker, which the AKC has recognized as distinct since 1946.
Many English Cockers are merry and eager to please, busy outdoors and mellow at home. In Toledo, that can mean a dog who happily works a Metropark trail on a leash, then curls up on the couch. Expect weekly combing and a trim roughly monthly. Coats and energy vary, and some dogs carry less coat and more drive than others.
