The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington in Northumberland, England, where it hunted vermin and ran down rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it the look of a lamb, but the body underneath is lean and fast, likely thanks to Whippet ancestry. In Columbus, that mix means a dog that's happy on the sofa and quick to bolt after a rabbit at the edge of a Metro Parks trail.
Most Bedlingtons are gentle, affectionate and playful, though temperament varies from dog to dog. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but mats if neglected, so expect regular brushing at home and professional clipping every six to eight weeks. The breed also carries an inherited liver disorder called copper toxicosis, so a veterinarian can advise on liver testing and a suitable diet after adoption.
