The Chinese Crested Dog is a toy breed that comes in two coat types, often born in the same litter. Hairless Cresteds have soft bare skin with silky hair on the head, feet and tail, while Powderpuffs wear a long, fine coat. Despite the name, the breed's origins are uncertain and probably lie outside China. Adults stand 11 to 13 inches tall, weigh roughly 8 to 13 pounds, and often live 13 to 18 years.
Many Cresteds are affectionate, playful and closely attached to their people, though some are shy with strangers and sensitive to rough handling. In Rochester, that sensitivity extends to the weather: a hairless Crested needs warm layers on cold days, and a Powderpuff's coat can collect snow and ice balls that need combing out. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Crested before deciding.
