The Australian Terrier was developed in 1800s Australia from rough-coated British terriers, working as a ratter, snake killer and farm watchdog. It was the first native Australian breed recognized, and the AKC accepted it in 1960. Aussies stand 10 to 11 inches tall and are long in the body, with erect ears, a harsh blue-and-tan, sandy or red coat, a ruff and a soft topknot.
Many are confident, affectionate and a little bossy for their size, with a ratter's urge to chase. In NYC, that means a firm grip on the leash around squirrels and pigeons, and reward-based training for the barking that carries down apartment hallways. The harsh coat sheds lightly and needs weekly brushing and occasional plucking. Dogs vary, so a particular Aussie's energy and manners matter more than the breed description.
