Despite the name, the American Eskimo Dog has nothing to do with Arctic sled dogs. It descends from white German Spitz dogs that immigrants brought to the United States in the early 1900s, many of them through New York, and the name changed amid anti-German feeling around World War I. Eskies later became circus favorites, which says a lot about how quickly they learn tricks. They come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, from about 6 to 35 pounds.
The white double coat, lion-like ruff and plumed tail get plenty of attention on a city sidewalk. Many Eskies are bright, playful and eager to please, but they're also alert watchdogs that bark readily and can be reserved with strangers. Plan on heavy shedding, regular brushing, daily activity and lots of company, since a bored or lonely Eskie can get noisy.
