The Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever and Poodle cross rather than a standardized breed, so size, coat and personality vary more than in most purebreds. It became popular in the 1990s as an alternative to the Labradoodle. Standards from Standard Poodle parents often weigh 50 to 80 pounds or more, while those with Miniature Poodle parents can come in well under 35. Coats range from straight and shaggy to loose waves or tight curls.
Many inherit the Golden's friendliness and the Poodle's quick mind, which makes them social, playful and eager to train. They also need daily exercise, company and frequent coat care, since wavy and curly coats mat easily. Shedding varies, and no Goldendoodle is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. In Brooklyn, that means planning for reliable walks, regular grooming and time at home.
