Scottish Highland farmers relied on the Cairn Terrier to slip into rock piles, or cairns, and bolt foxes and vermin. That job shaped a sturdy, short-legged terrier with a foxy face, small upright ears and a harsh, weather-resistant double coat in wheaten, red, gray, brindle or near-black. Many brindles keep changing color for years, and a Cairn played Toto in The Wizard of Oz.
Cairns tend to be cheerful, curious and confident, friendly with most people but independent enough to ignore a dull request. Expect digging, a strong urge to chase small animals and barking when bored. In return, the breed is usually long-lived and hardy, and the low-shedding coat stays tidy with weekly brushing and periodic stripping. In a Brooklyn apartment, that portable size is a real plus.
