The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest dog breeds, a sighthound from the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan that chased game by sight and speed over rough ground. Its silky coat once protected it from harsh cold, and its big padded feet cushioned rocky terrain. That history fits Albuquerque's high, dry country and its gravelly mesa trails.
Afghans are sensitive, independent and often aloof with strangers, yet affectionate and even clownish with their own people. Strong prey drive and selective recall mean safe, fenced running space matters. The coat is a real commitment: frequent bathing and brushing, or professional grooming, prevents painful mats. Dogs vary, so a quiet, dignified companion is common but never guaranteed.
