About the Belgian Shepherd / Laekenois breed

The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian herding dogs, alongside the Malinois, Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog. It takes its name from the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence, where these rough-coated shepherds tended flocks, and it also guarded linen laid out to bleach in the fields. The American Kennel Club, which treats the four as separate breeds, added it to the Herding Group in 2020.

A Laekenois has a tousled, harsh fawn to reddish coat with a dark muzzle, giving it a shaggier look than its relatives. Many are intelligent, alert and devoted to their families while staying reserved with strangers. They need daily exercise, training and real work for their minds, and are best suited to active people who want a capable partner.

Having a Belgian Shepherd / Laekenois in Mount Holly

The Laekenois shares the Belgian herders' sharp intelligence, drive and protective instincts, wrapped in a distinctive rough coat. Its need for exercise and mental work, its wariness of strangers and its sensitivity to handling matter most when deciding whether one fits your life.

Temperament

Laekenois tend to be affectionate and playful with their own people and watchful or aloof with strangers. They are protective of home and family, so early, ongoing socialization matters. Most learn quickly and want to please, but they respond poorly to harsh handling. Some herd children or other pets, and a few can be bossy with other dogs.

Exercise Needs

A Laekenois needs substantial daily exercise, such as long walks, running, hiking or vigorous play, plus regular mental work. Obedience, herding, tracking, agility and scent games give this working dog the job it craves. Without both physical and mental outlets, many become restless or destructive. Working-line dogs usually need more than companion-line dogs.

Health Considerations

The Laekenois is considered a robust breed. The Belgian breed club recommends hip and elbow dysplasia screening for all four varieties, and epilepsy and inherited eye disease have been reported in Belgian Shepherds generally. Ears and teeth need routine care. Have a veterinarian check the hips and elbows, and keep up regular veterinary checkups.

Living Space

A Laekenois does best in a home with a securely fenced yard and people who are around much of the day, though an active owner can make apartment life work. It wants to live indoors with its family, not alone in a yard. Its watchfulness means it may bark at passersby, so training and supervision matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Belgian Laekenois dogs shed, though usually less noticeably than their longer-coated Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog relatives. The harsh, tousled outer coat sheds lightly year-round, and the undercoat sheds more heavily once or twice a year. Weekly brushing, with extra combing during seasonal sheds, keeps hair under control. Occasional trimming helps, but shaving can damage the coat's texture.
