The Appenzeller Sennenhund comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. It's one of four tricolor Swiss mountain breeds and the most energetic of them. Medium-sized and muscular, it weighs roughly 48 to 70 pounds and wears a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, topped by a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers tend to be alert, confident and reserved with strangers, and devoted to their own people. They were bred to work all day, so training and exercise matter as much as affection. In Charlotte that can mean a daily routine of greenway miles and yard time, plus a plan for seasonal shedding. Dogs vary, and an experienced, active household often suits this breed best.
