Australian settlers in the 1800s crossed rough-coated British terriers to get a hardy dog that could handle rats and snakes, watch the homestead and work long days. It became the first native Australian breed recognized, and the AKC accepted it in 1960. Aussies are small but long-bodied, with erect ears, a harsh coat in blue and tan, sandy or red, and a soft topknot.
In Atlanta, that working heritage shows up on tree-lined streets full of squirrels, where many Aussies will lunge to chase on a leash. They're confident, affectionate and often bossy with other dogs. The low-shedding coat needs regular brushing and occasional plucking, and a bored Aussie may bark or dig. Dogs vary, so expect a spirited companion rather than a guaranteed temperament.
