The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest dog breeds, a sighthound from the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan that chased game by sight and speed. Its silky coat protected it from harsh weather, and its big padded feet handled rocky ground. British officers brought these hounds to England in the late 1800s, and the breed became a show-ring favorite.
At home, an Afghan is usually dignified, a little silly and devoted to its own people, though it can be reserved with strangers. Strong prey drive and selective recall mean Atlanta's squirrel-filled streets call for a leash or a fence. The coat needs frequent brushing and bathing, or professional grooming, to prevent mats. Dogs of the breed vary, so spend time getting to know the dog in front of you.
