The Neapolitan Mastiff descends from the guard and catch dogs of southern Italy, and the modern breed was standardized in Italy after World War II. It is a giant, with loose skin, heavy facial folds, a hanging dewlap and a short coat in gray, black, mahogany or tawny, sometimes brindled. Adults commonly weigh 110 to 160 pounds and move with a rolling, lumbering walk.
At home, many Neos are quiet, affectionate and happy to nap most of the day, while staying watchful with strangers. They drool heavily, tire and overheat quickly, and often live only seven to ten years. Patient, reward-based training and steady socialization matter with a guardian this strong, and every dog differs in confidence and energy.
