The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Adults typically weigh 70 to 110 pounds and stand 24 to 28 inches tall, with a short, weatherproof black-and-tan or harlequin coat and double dewclaws on each hind leg. Its tan leg markings earned it the nickname red stockings.
Beaucerons are usually intelligent, loyal and watchful, and they mature slowly, often not settling until about three years old. In Miami, that means building daily exercise around the heat and practicing socialization on busy sidewalks and at dog parks, so the dog learns that neighbors and traffic are normal. Dogs vary, and a rescue Beauceron's own personality matters more than any breed description.
