The American Water Spaniel was developed in 19th-century Wisconsin as a compact hunting companion that could work from a small boat and retrieve birds from water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still an uncommon breed. The dense, oily, curly coat comes in liver, brown or chocolate, and shedding is moderate.
Most are affectionate, clever and sensitive, with a stubborn streak and a slow-maturing, puppyish side, so patient, reward-based training works best. In Miami the coat is the main thing to plan around: curls hold moisture in humid air, and the drop ears are prone to infection, so brushing and ear care belong in the weekly routine. Dogs vary, and a young adult will usually be far more energetic than a senior.
