Cairn Terriers come from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, where farmers and hunters used them to bolt foxes and vermin out of cairns, the rock piles that give the breed its name. They're small, sturdy and short-legged, with a foxy face, upright ears and a harsh, weather-resistant double coat in wheaten, red, gray, brindle or near-black.
Most Cairns are cheerful, curious and confident, though every dog varies. Expect some digging, chasing and boredom barking. The low-shedding coat stays tidy with weekly brushing, which suits a small SF apartment, and a quick towel-off after a rainy-season walk keeps floors cleaner. Cairns are usually hardy and long-lived, often reaching 13 to 15 years.
