The Silky Terrier was developed in Sydney, Australia, around the turn of the twentieth century from Yorkshire Terrier and Australian Terrier crosses. It stands 9 to 10 inches tall and weighs roughly 8 to 12 pounds, with a wedge-shaped head, small upright ears and a long, glossy blue-and-tan coat parted down the back.
Despite the lap-dog looks, a Silky is a working terrier at heart: alert, curious and affectionate, with more independence and bark than many people expect. Chasing and digging come naturally. In San Diego, that means leashed walks or a secure yard, a harness, steady brushing or regular trims, and patient reward-based training. Dogs vary, so a Silky's own history and personality matter more than its breed.
