French Bulldogs began with small English Bulldogs that lace workers carried to France in the 1800s, where they were crossed with local dogs and became fixtures of Paris cafés. The upright bat ears were later set in the United States. A Frenchie is compact and muscular, with a square head, a very short muzzle, loose wrinkled skin and a short, smooth coat in brindle, fawn, cream or white.
Most are playful, affectionate and adaptable, and quieter than many breeds. The flat face brings breathing, heat, skin and spine problems, so cooling and a vet budget deserve real thought before adopting in San Bernardino. Dogs labeled French Bulldog in listings may be mixes, and each dog's temperament and health vary.
