Black Mouth Curs came out of the rural South, where farmers and hunters wanted one dog that could tree squirrels and raccoons, bay hogs, move cattle and watch the homestead. Most have a short yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat and the dark muzzle that gives them their name, and they usually weigh 40 to 95 pounds.
That working background shows up at home. Many curs are loyal and watchful with family, wary of strangers and sensitive to harsh handling, so calm, consistent training goes a long way. In Glendale, expect to plan around secure fencing, a leash on every trail and exercise before the heat builds. Prey drive can be strong, so cats and small animals need careful introductions, and each dog's personality varies.
