The English Bulldog descends from the Old English Bulldog, a fierce bull-baiting dog, and was remade into a companion after England outlawed the sport in 1835. The AKC lists it simply as the Bulldog. Adults usually weigh 40 to 55 pounds, with a massive head, loose wrinkled skin and a low, wide body.
Most Bulldogs are calm, affectionate and good-humored, happy with short walks and long naps beside their people. The flat face comes with trade-offs: breathing trouble, poor heat tolerance, skin-fold infections and joint problems are common, and vet bills can add up. In Mobile, that means planning for air conditioning, weight control and a veterinarian who knows flat-faced breeds.
