A Bengal looks like a small wild cat, with a muscular body, a spotted, rosetted or marbled coat and, in many cats, a glitter on the fur. The breed began in the United States in the 1960s with crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat, but pet Bengals today are many generations removed and fully domestic.
Bengals are intelligent, curious and athletic, and many stay kittenish well into adulthood. Some fetch, walk on a harness or play in running water. That suits people who enjoy an interactive cat and frustrates anyone hoping for a quiet lap cat. Since cats in Houston should live indoors, the home has to supply the stimulation: climbing space, daily play and puzzle feeders. The short coat sheds lightly, though Bengals aren't hypoallergenic.
