Birmans are semi-longhaired, colorpointed cats with deep blue eyes and pure white front paws called gloves. White also runs up the back of the hind legs in what are called laces. The modern breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the sacred temple cat story is legend. Adults usually weigh 7 to 14 pounds and take about three years to mature fully.
Many Birmans are gentle and sociable, with soft voices, and they like staying near their people without demanding constant attention. The coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired coats, though weekly combing helps. In Columbus, that makes them a comfortable match for homes where someone is around often, from a rowhouse to a ranch. Each cat's personality varies.
