The American Wirehair began with a single red-and-white kitten born in a farmhouse litter in Verona, New York, in 1966. His crimped, springy coat came from a spontaneous dominant gene mutation, and crossing his descendants with American Shorthairs established the breed. It's still one of the rarest in the cat world.
Wirehairs are medium to large, usually 8 to 15 pounds, and mature slowly over three or four years. Many are easygoing, affectionate and playful without being pushy, and they tend to get along with children and other pets. That makes them a comfortable match for a Columbus household that's home in the evenings. Cats vary, though, so a calm temperament isn't guaranteed, and the coat can run oily, so gentle grooming helps.
