The Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat with a white body and color on the head and tail, a pattern now known as van. The breed was developed in Britain from cats brought back from Turkey in 1955, and it is named for the Lake Van region. The cashmere-soft single coat has no undercoat and sheds water, which helps explain why many Vans paw at faucets and splash in their bowls.
Vans mature slowly, often taking three to five years to reach full size, anywhere from 7 to 20 pounds. Most are clever, vocal and athletic, and many prefer play and company on their own terms to being carried. In a city of tall apartments and older houses, the best match is an adopter who wants an engaged, opinionated cat and will provide vertical space and daily play.
