Canadian Hairless is the early name for the cat now registered as the Sphynx. The breed started in Toronto in 1966, when a domestic shorthair had a hairless kitten named Prune, and Minnesota kittens born in the 1970s widened the gene pool. Despite the name, it's a Canadian cat, not an Egyptian one. Medium-sized at 6 to 12 pounds, it has a warm, suede-like body, big ears and lemon-shaped eyes.
Many are outgoing, clever and happiest with company, though each cat varies. Skin oils that fur would normally absorb build up, so regular baths and ear cleaning are part of the routine, along with warmth and sun protection. Heart screening matters too, since hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is common in the breed. In Charlotte, that care fits an indoor home with a bit of daily playtime.
