Birmans are colorpointed, semi-longhaired cats with deep blue eyes and pure white front paws, called gloves, with laces running up the back of the hind legs. The breed was developed in France after cats arrived from Burma around 1919, and the sacred temple cat story is legend rather than history. Adults typically weigh 7 to 14 pounds and take about three years to mature fully.
Many Birmans are gentle and sociable, with soft voices, and they like to stay near their people without being pushy. Their silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than many longhaired coats, though weekly combing still helps. In Charlotte's humid summers, an indoor Birman does well in air conditioning, and a quick comb keeps loose fur off the sofa.
