The Abyssinian is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a short, ticked coat: each hair carries several bands of color, giving a warm, glowing look. Large alert ears and almond eyes add a small-wildcat expression. Despite the name, genetic research points to Indian Ocean coastal and Southeast Asian ancestry, and the breed was developed in Britain.
Abys are busy, athletic and people-focused, though many aren't lap cats. They like high perches, puzzle toys and company, and they get restless when bored. In Louisville, that means vertical space and daily play matter more than square footage. Adopters should also know about inherited conditions such as pyruvate kinase deficiency and retinal degeneration.
