The Belgian Malinois is the short-coated fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding breed developed in Belgium in the 1890s. It's lean and square, with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year. Adults usually weigh between 40 and 80 pounds, with males larger than females.
A Malinois's biggest need is purposeful activity: training, fetch, long walks and puzzle games. Many are devoted to their family and wary of strangers, and some chase moving things such as bikes, cars and squirrels. Early socialization and consistent, reward-based training matter, and every dog differs, so get to know the dog in front of you rather than relying on the breed's reputation.
