Despite the name, Great Danes are German, descended from boar hounds kept by German nobility. Males often stand 30 to 32 inches or more at the shoulder and can weigh up to 175 pounds, with females somewhat smaller, though dogs vary. The short, smooth coat sheds moderately and needs little beyond brushing and the occasional bath.
Many Danes are friendly, gentle and calmer indoors than their size suggests, but that size shapes everything: food bills, car space, careful growth in puppies and a lifespan of roughly 7 to 10 years. In Huntington, that means thinking about humid summers, cold winter mornings and a home with room for a very large bed. Bloat and heart disease are the main health concerns to learn about before adopting.
