In the United States, Cocker Spaniel means the American Cocker, the smallest dog in the AKC Sporting Group. The name comes from woodcock hunting in England, where spaniels flushed birds for hunters. The American type grew smaller, with a rounded head, large dark eyes, a short square muzzle and a long, silky coat in black, solid colors or parti-colors.
Many Cockers are cheerful, gentle companions that stay close to their people and respond best to soft, patient training. Upkeep is the trade-off: the coat needs regular brushing and professional trims, the long ears need weekly checks, and eye and ear problems are common in the breed. In Spokane, feathering picks up burrs, mud and snow on trail walks, so a brush-down after outings is part of the routine.
