The Beagle is a small scent hound that took its modern shape in 1830s England, where packs followed rabbits and hare by nose and voice. It's a sturdy, compact dog, usually 18 to 30 pounds and 12 to 15 inches tall, with a short, dense coat that sheds moderately all year and a bit more in spring and fall.
Most Beagles are friendly, curious and happy around people and other dogs, which explains their lasting popularity. The same nose that makes a trail walk fun also sends a Beagle after rabbits, squirrels and whatever else the wind carries. Expect a food-motivated, vocal dog with unreliable recall, and remember that many Beagles in adoption are mixes, so size and energy vary from dog to dog.
