American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs brought from Britain in the 1800s, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1936. They're stocky, muscular dogs of roughly 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, a short glossy coat in nearly any color and a tail that tapers to a point. Shedding is moderate and grooming is simple.
Many AmStaffs are confident, affectionate and goofy with their people, and they'll lean on you or climb into a lap without hesitation. Their strength calls for leash training and early socialization, and some are selective with other dogs even when well raised. Dogs vary, so a dog's actual behavior matters more than the breed label. In Seattle that means a sturdy leash, a towel by the door and a plan for busy sidewalks.
