The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier, with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The goal was a companion with a heavier, more muscular frame and a people-loving nature. Varieties run from compact Pockets to tall XLs, and the short coat comes in nearly every color.
Many Bullies are affectionate and happiest leaning on someone, but they vary, and training and history shape behavior more than looks do. Their strength makes early leash manners and slow introductions to other dogs important. In Seattle, that means a sturdy leash for busy sidewalks, a towel by the door for wet days, and keeping the dog lean to protect its joints.
