Hound is a label for a large family of hunting dogs, not one breed. Most adoptable hounds are scent hound mixes with Beagle, Coonhound, Foxhound or Plott ancestry, so they range from about 20 to 70 pounds, with long ears, a short coat and a deep voice. Sighthound types such as Greyhounds and Whippets turn up less often.
Most hounds are friendly, sociable dogs that get along with people and other dogs. They also follow their noses, bay or howl, and treat training as a negotiation, so patient, food-based coaching works best. Ear care, weight control and a secure fence matter more than fancy grooming. In Tyler's humid heat, a short coat is an advantage. Because ancestry varies so much, the size, energy and voice described on a dog's listing say more than the hound label does.
