The Standard Schnauzer is the original of the three Schnauzer breeds, developed in southern Germany as a farm dog that caught rats, guarded the yard and rode along with carriages. Its name comes from the German word for snout, a nod to the bristly beard and eyebrows. The wiry coat comes in pepper and salt or solid black, and the Miniature and Giant Schnauzers were both developed from it.
Many Standards are clever, spirited and loyal, with a watchful streak and a playful sense of humor. They shed little, but the coat needs regular brushing and trimming or hand-stripping. That ratting background means some chase the squirrels, armadillos and other small wildlife seen around Fort Worth, so a secure leash and fence matter.
