The Pomeranian is a toy spitz, a fluffy descendant of much larger German Spitz dogs that was bred down in size over the 1800s. The standard weight is 3 to 7 pounds, though plenty of pet Poms run heavier, and the thick double coat comes in nearly every color. Look for a foxy face, small pricked ears and a plumed tail carried over the back.
In El Paso, that coat and that confidence are the two things to plan around. Brushing a few times a week keeps the undercoat from matting, and an alert Pom will bark at doorbells, neighbors and passing trucks. Early, gentle training and a harness for walks go a long way. Poms are fragile, so supervise them around large dogs and small children.
