The Pekingese is an ancient toy breed from China, kept inside the imperial court and named for Peking, now Beijing. British troops brought the first ones to England in 1860. Adults weigh 7 to 14 pounds and stand 6 to 9 inches tall, with a heavy front, short legs, a flat face and a long double coat that forms a mane around the neck.
The coat and the flat face shape most of the daily care. Plan on about an hour of brushing a week, more during seasonal shedding, plus regular cleaning of the fold above the nose. Pekes are loyal to their favorite people, reserved with strangers and independent about training, so patience works better than pressure. Dogs vary, and an adopted Peke may be calmer or bolder than the typical description.
