Border Collies come from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds valued dogs that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little direction. A dog named Old Hemp, born in Northumberland in 1893, set the quiet, intense working style the breed is still known for. They're medium-sized and athletic, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with rough or smooth double coats in black and white and many other colors.
Many Border Collies are brilliant, eager learners who bond closely with their people, though dogs vary in how intense they are. That intelligence needs an outlet. Without exercise and mental challenges, a Border Collie may invent its own jobs, like herding children or chasing cars. In Corpus Christi, that means planning for training games and runs, and keeping the dog cool through long, humid summers.
