The Chow Chow is an ancient northern Chinese spitz, recognized by its lion-like ruff, scowling expression and blue-black tongue. Genetic studies place it among the oldest dog lineages. It comes in a rough or a smooth coat, both double, so shedding is heavy. The build is square and heavy-boned, usually 45 to 70 pounds.
Chows tend to be dignified, independent and attached to a small circle of people. In Abilene, that suits adopters who prefer a calm evening at home over a dog who greets every visitor. Early socialization, gentle handling and consistent training matter, and so does planning around heat. Chows vary, so watch how a dog reacts to new people, other dogs and unfamiliar places.
