The Rat Terrier is an American farm dog, developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s from English terriers and feists, with Whippet and Beagle ancestry added later for speed and scenting. Farm families kept them to clear barns of rats and chase squirrels, and the AKC fully recognized the breed in 2010.
Rat Terriers come in miniature and standard sizes, usually 10 to 25 pounds, with a smooth coat that is always pied with white. Many are cheerful and attached to their people, though prey drive, digging and a talent for escaping yards are common. In Memphis, that means secure fencing, a leash near the squirrels and a plan for hot afternoons. Dogs vary, so a particular Rat Terrier's behavior depends on more than breed.
