Dutch Shepherds began as all-purpose farm dogs in the Netherlands, herding sheep, keeping flocks out of crops and watching over farmyards. Brindle in gold or silver tones has defined the breed since 1914, and the coat comes short, long or rough. Today the breed is best known for police, military and sport work, and it remains rare, listed in the AKC's Miscellaneous Class.
Many are loyal, alert and eager to work, with an independent streak and some reserve toward strangers. In Knoxville, that means early socialization around busy greenways and patios, and a daily routine with real mental work. The double coat sheds seasonally, so brushing helps through humid summers. Adopters who enjoy training as a hobby tend to do best, and temperament varies from dog to dog.
