The American Cocker is the smallest dog in the AKC Sporting Group, descended from English spaniels that flushed woodcock for hunters. In the US the name means the American type, with a rounded head, large dark eyes, a short square muzzle and a long, silky coat in black, solid colors or parti-colors. The breed topped American popularity charts for eighteen years.
Many Cockers are gentle, cheerful and eager to please, and they respond best to soft, patient training. They are adaptable about space but not about upkeep. The coat needs regular brushing and professional trims, the long ears need weekly checks, and the breed carries real eye and ear risks. Dogs vary, so a Cocker's own energy and habits matter more than the breed label.
