A black Lab is the Labrador Retriever in its original and most familiar color, not a separate breed. The breed traces to the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland and was refined in Britain as a gun dog, which explains the otter tail, broad head and dense, water-resistant double coat. A small white chest spot is allowed, and many black Labs gray around the muzzle with age.
Color doesn't set personality. Labs tend to be friendly, food-motivated and eager to please, though dogs vary, and field-bred Labs are often leaner and more driven than show-bred ones. In Greenville, expect steady shedding that calls for regular brushing, humid summers that call for shade and water, and a slow-maturing, bouncy adolescence that rewards consistent training. Careful portions keep weight in check.
