The American Cocker is the smallest dog in the AKC Sporting Group, descended from spaniels that flushed woodcock for English hunters. In the US, "Cocker Spaniel" means this American type, with a rounded head, large dark eyes, a short square muzzle and a long, silky coat in black, solid colors or parti-colors. Many are cheerful, gentle and affectionate, though temperament varies from dog to dog.
In Rochester, the coat is the main care task. Plan on brushing several times a week, a professional trim every six to eight weeks, and a weekly look at the long ears, which hold moisture. Cockers respond best to soft, patient training and don't enjoy being left alone all day. Adopters who like grooming and daily walks often end up with a devoted housemate.
