The French Bulldog started in nineteenth-century France as a small companion dog, descended from toy Bulldogs that English lace workers brought across the Channel. Today's Frenchie is compact and muscular, with a square head, bat ears, loose wrinkled skin and a short, smooth coat in fawn, cream, brindle or pied patterns. Weight is usually 16 to 28 pounds.
Most Frenchies are playful, affectionate and happiest near their people, which makes them a natural match for smaller Binghamton homes. They shed lightly to moderately and need little grooming, but the flat face brings real health needs. Because the breed is so popular, a dog labeled a French Bulldog may be a mix, and size or looks alone say little about its health.
