Pomeranians descend from larger German Spitz dogs and take their name from Pomerania, a Baltic region. Queen Victoria's fondness for small, colorful Poms helped shrink the breed in Victorian England, and today's dog usually weighs 3 to 7 pounds, though plenty of pet Poms run a bit heavier. The look is unmistakable: a standoff double coat, a plumed tail carried over the back, small pricked ears and a foxy face.
Many Poms are bold, curious and quick to sound the alarm at every noise. They bond closely with their people and enjoy learning tricks, but they're fragile, so falls, rough play and larger dogs are real concerns. Dogs vary, so a Pomeranian's own personality matters more than the label. Plan on regular brushing, dental care and consistent barking training.
