The English Bulldog is a sturdy, low-slung dog with a broad head, loose wrinkled skin and a rolling walk. Developed in England from the Old English Bulldog, it was reshaped into a companion, and today many are mellow, affectionate and fond of lounging near their people. Adults typically weigh 40 to 55 pounds, and short walks and long naps suit them better than hard runs.
That calm nature fits Gulfport well, but the flat face needs attention. Breathing trouble, poor heat tolerance, skin-fold infections and joint problems are common, and lifespans typically run 7 to 10 years. Expect an air-conditioned home, careful weight control and a veterinarian who knows flat-faced breeds. Bulldogs vary, and a dog's own temperament and medical history say more than the breed alone.
