Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the high plateau of central Turkey, where flock-guarding dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from wolves and other predators for a very long time. Rather than herding, they live alongside the animals and decide for themselves when to intervene. Adults are big and rangy, with males often 110 to 150 pounds, and most wear a short to medium fawn coat with a dark mask, though many colors occur.
At home, Anatolians tend to be calm, observant and deeply loyal, but their guarding instincts remain strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of territory and inclined to roam if fences allow. They mature slowly, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling. Prospective adopters should be ready for careful socialization, secure fencing and a dog whose judgment may not always match theirs.
