The Standard Poodle began as a German water retriever, and the sporting build is still there under the fancy clips: a square, long-legged dog, usually 18 to 24 inches tall and 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense, curly coat. Most are bright, sensitive and attached to their people, and many stay playful well into their senior years.
That mix fits St. Charles households that like trails and training. A Standard doesn't shed much, but the coat keeps growing, so plan on a groomer every six to eight weeks and brushing at home several times a week. Dogs vary, and some are reserved with strangers or uneasy when left alone, so get to know a dog's personality before you commit.
